Community Outreach

The Community Outreach committee offers many ways to get involved in Singapore's community. Contribute to worthwhile organizations, help children with their English, or give the gift of life by donating blood. Whatever opportunity you choose, it will be a truly rewarding experience. Get involved today! For more information please contact Jean Miller.

Building Blocks
blocks

Building Blocks is the newest subcommittee under Community Outreach, which is exactly what we are doing - reaching out to the community - to help underprivileged children with their English. We meet them at the Henderson Road Community Club (just about 10 minutes from the American Club) to encourage them in their English studies. We read to them, play word games, and generally get to know them. We work in teams so that none of us have to feel guilty about our travels and the children can grow to depend on us. Perhaps you aren't able to join us, but have some materials that might be of use? There are many ways to help. Contact Judy Kalyan at 6729-9003 for more information.

Helping Hands
helping hands

Helping Hands is a subcommittee created to coordinate all community volunteer opportunities. This is the place where you can get advice on different volunteer needs in Singapore depending upon your interests, abilities, and time commitment. Helping Hands will also coordinated occasional one-off group volunteer days for AWA members such as community service days or special interest help. Please contact Wendy Dwyer if you are looking for a volunteer position, if you have suggestions of places in need of volunteers, or if you would like to help in coordinating or participating in group efforts. It's a great way to see another side of Singapore and give something back to our host community.

Mt. Elizabeth Hospital Visitation
reading

We travel from ward to ward visiting expat patients, lending books and magazines. Some have no family or friends in Singapore, and really appreciate a chance for a little chat. We work in a team of two as the book cart is heavy, and we try to provide this service every weekday except public holidays. A smile and a friendly disposition are all we require, and the reward is a sense of satisfaction when we see someone recover and go home. To volunteer a couple of hours once or twice a month, or for more information, contact Sheila Briggs.

Sunshine

Do you know an AWA Member who...

sunshine

Sunshine sends get well cards to hospitalized AWA members, congratulations to AWA new moms and condolences to AWA members or their immediate family who have lost a loved one. If you know someone who could use a little "Sunshine" please contact Helen Hong-Hood.

Fine Print Book Shop

Fine Print was established in 2006 by AWA at Tan Tock Seng Hospital's Centre for Disease Control. Housed in an early 20th century bungalow, the objective of the program is to teach HIV/AIDS patients how to manage a small business. Gently-used adult English books donated by AWA members are shelved and sold in the shop, as well as by the patients from the pushcart at the hospital. AWA volunteers oversee the shop and provide brownies and other treats for the customers. Contact Jean Miller for more details.

Andrew & Grace Home

"To Love the Unloved"  is Andrew and Grace Home's mission to provide a safe place to live for girls between 12 and 20 who have been neglected, abused, orphaned or delinquent. They receive counseling services, alternative education and vocational training, as well as prenatal care and parenting skills when needed. The home is a loving environment for up to 60 girls of all nationalities. Contact Andrea Fulton or Carol Korn for more info and to learn how you can help.

Where to Donate

Whether you are moving in, out, or are in-between, you probably have some "stuff" you would like to get rid off. Check out the above link to find out who is looking for what you no longer need.

Volunteers Make AWA Work...

You can make a difference at AWA in a number of ways. Consider donating some of your time and expertise in any of the following ways:

Front Desk

Get to know the 'ins and outs' of the AWA. Volunteer at our office front desk! We are looking for outgoing, friendly volunteers who love to smile. Please call the office or e-mail the Office Manager.

Bamboo Telegraph: AWA Magazine

Writers, graphic artists, layout people, and advertising go-getters are always needed at the Bamboo Telegraph. Help us continue bringing you a high quality, informative magazine. Contact the AWA office if interested in joining our versatile team.

AWA Board

Board members meet monthly to discuss AWA policy and plan events. If you want to have a say in how the AWA is run and the activities we have please join us!

Nominating Committee

This committee solicits nominations for executive board positions each year and oversees the election process. Helping form the Executive Board for the coming year is an excellent way to give something back to the AWA.

Policy Committee

The Policy group periodically reviews the AWA policy and constitution to ensure it remains a relevant, accurate and helpful guide for the Association. Policy must be structured but at the same time flexible. Any expertise in this area is always gratefully received.

Ways & Means

The Ways & Means Committee is the fundraising arm of the AWA. Money is raised through the sale of items specially designed for the AWA including greeting cards, wrapping paper, stationary, clothing and much more. If you would like to be more involved in the AWA but aren't sure what to do, Ways & Means is a great place to start. We are always looking for new ideas and our membership is the best place to find them.
