TENNIS PROGRAM 2009 - 2010

The tennis committee offers a variety of Singles and Doubles play for players of all levels.  The season runs from September through December and from February through April.  Other team tennis is offered on the off-season from December through February.  Tournaments and an annual luncheon are offered in May; a great way to end the season!

Our program is divided into two main groups; Social Tennis and Competitive Tennis. Trophies will not be awarded to social tennis events.

SOCIAL TENNIS

Social Round Robin

To participate contact the Coordinators:

Constance Hsia or call 9675-9489

          Maureen Birdsell or call 9820-1745

Doubles Rounds is the most social tennis activity offered and provides an opportunity to play with (and against) many players at varied skill levels.  Rounds are played in the fall, spring, and winter seasons.

Coordinators provide schedules of play.  Players are placed into groups, which are determined through our court assessment procedure to allow for enjoyable play with players of similar skill level.  This activity is played on Tuesdays.  Each week players are divided into groups of four with 1 captain designated for the day.  3 sets of tennis are played, 1 set played with each partner.  The captain is responsible for scheduling the court, supplying 1 can of balls and sending the score in via email to the coordinator.

COMPETITIVE TENNIS

Singles Challenge

To participate contact the Coordinator:

Leslie Sodano or call 9736-0670

The purpose of the Singles Challenge is to allow singles tennis players to meet and play other players of similar skill levels in a friendly competition.  New players may join at the beginning of each season. Singles group levels are determined by our on court assessment.
A schedule of play will be issued to players before the start of the challenge.  Players should try and adhere to the schedule as much as they can and matches can only be postponed to another week by mutual agreement (detailed rules will be issued to players upon joining the challenge).  Scores are to be turned into the coordinators promptly after each match is played.   Standings will be posted weekly.

This is the only tennis activity that offers flexibility of match day.

Doubles Challenge

To participate contact the Coordinator:

          Leslie Sodano or call 9736-0670

Unlike our other tennis activities, the Doubles Challenge presents an opportunity for players to select and play with a single partner.  Players and their partners (pairs) will play against all other pairs in their respective group and/or section of the draw.  Each pair must play a match every week. The day of play for this activity is Thursday.  Pairs must be available for matches to be completed on match day. Players submit the match results to the coordinators.  A detailed explanation of the Doubles Challenge and the rules of play will be distributed to the players at the beginning of each season

Team Tennis

To participate contact the Coordinators:

Intermediate: Jasmine Kahlil or call 9012-2941 and Trisha Fish or call 9088-0623

Advanced: Henrietta Hurst or call 9638-0569 and Therese Ross

Team Tennis emphasizes team play, sportsmanship and competition. This is one of the more competitive options from AWA tennis.  Players are assigned to teams in order to achieve a competitive balance among each team. Team tennis starts the week of 18th November, ending the week of 10th February. This activity is played on Wednesday or Thursday depending on your placement through the on court assessment. The duration of the team tennis season will vary according to the number of players who sign up. Please note that the existence of team tennis depends on the number of players who sign up and requires a commitment to play 50% of the scheduled number of matches during the season.

TOURNAMENTS

AWA sponsors a yearly Doubles and Singles Tournament at the end of the regular tennis season and an Open Tournament.  Information on these events will be emailed to all players.  You must have a current assessment, be a current AWA member and a registered AWA tennis player by the tournament registration deadline to be eligible to play in the AWA tournament.

For more information, please contact the coordinators:

          Sue Cumbers and Jasmine Khalil

END-OF-SEASON AWARDS LUNCHEON

An awards luncheon is held in May and offers a nice opportunity to socialize and mingle prior to the summer holidays. It always promises to be a fun occasion with great entertainment, prizes and food.  Members, Open Tournament participants and guests are very welcome to this event.

Please see the Event Details page of our website for more information.

AWA COURT ASSESSMENT

To be assessed contact the Coordinator:

       Jasmine Khalil

AWA Tennis uses the AWA Court Assessment System. This assessment process does not affect any current NTRP, ITN, or USTA rating you may have and will only be used for AWA events.  Current LTS Premier and Division 1 players as well as WITS Division A and Alpha players will be exempt from this assessment process. All other AWA members participating in any AWA tennis activity must have an AWA Court Assessment.  Additional information on this assessment can be obtained from our Assessment/Membership coordinators.  They are responsible for the scheduling of your assessment.

For any other enquiries contact the Tennis Chair Jasmine Khalil.
