Arts & Culture

The Arts & Culture Committee can help you learn about and cultivate a passion for Asian arts and culture. You are invited to experience the vast diversity of this region through our monthly lectures and excursions. We will explore such areas as appreciating Chinese ceramics, understanding regional architecture like the Chinese shophouse or a Balinese temple, or learning how important textiles can be in the life of regional cultures. Additionally, each fall we present a cultural luncheon which focuses on the arts, culture and food of a specific Asian country.

If you are interested in helping to plan these activities, want information about upcoming events or are looking to join this committee please contact Diane Abbott.

Choir

Come Celebrate Life! Love! and Music! Sing your problems away... when you turn our music up... you'll turn your blues down. Choir is a volunteer group open to all members of AWA. No experience is required, just the ability to carry a tune! We sing some great music and make wonderful friends along the way. We are looking for anyone who likes to sing, wants to make new friends, and have fun!

Choir began rehearsals for our Fall Season in September. We meet on Wednesday mornings at 9:45am. Contact Beth Clower at 9779 2754 or eb_clower@yahoo.com if interested.

Faith & Spirituality
Christianity

The Christianity Committee will help you find just the right church or Bible study that fits into your weekly schedule. Information on local churches and established Bible study groups is available at the AWA office. For more information stop by or contact Jody Chan.

Foreign Language
Les Chouchoux: Ladies Who Speak French

If you are interested in the opportunity to speak French in a fun and relaxed atmosphere with an international group, join us. Native speakers and those who use French as an alternate language are welcome. The emphasis is on speaking French for fun and meeting new friends. We discuss many things: books, art, cooking, restaurants, travel and also French and other cultures. We meet once a month for lunch and also plan outings. Every suggestion is welcome. Contact Caroline Benjamin for more information.

Movie Lunch

The Movie Lunch Group meets on the third Monday of the month for lunch followed by a movie in the Orchard Road area. The movie is typically one that your spouse or partner does not want to see, whether it's a "chick flick" or an art house film. For more information or to be added to our monthly contact list email Anne Perng Branigan.

Games
Bridge

AWA Bridge meets every Monday from 12:30 pm at the American Club and we play according to American Standard Five-Card Major Rules. While intermediate bridge players do not need a partner to join, beginners are encouraged to come as a table of four. We do play duplicate but we randomly determine partners on the day of play. Please join us! Each session costs $20 and includes a light lunch. Contact Susan Ingelbinck for more information and to sign up.

Bunco

Bunco is a simple dice game that can be learned in about five minutes. Two sets of partners sit at each table and at the end of each round, everyone changes partners. This is a good social activity where players can quickly meet new people and friends can get together. We meet once a month in a member's home. Contacts: Mary Glynn and Alison Soderberg.

Mahjong

If you have always wondered about this game, now is your chance to learn. The game we play is low-stress, FUN and "learner friendly." We play Mondays at 1:00 pm, poolside at the American Club. The game is played with tiles consisting of three suits (bamboos, characters and circles), four winds and three dragons. The object is to complete a hand consisting of four ‘groups’ of tiles and a pair of identical tiles. Each ‘group’ consists of either three or four identical tiles (called ‘pung’ and ‘kong’ respectively), or three consecutively numbered tiles in one suit (called a ‘chow’). We love to teach newcomers how to play and we welcome members who have played mahjong in the past. Our game is really low stress — we don't even keep score! We play for entertainment, good company, to sharpen our minds and, of course, the satisfaction that comes with an elusive winning hand. To find out more or to be added to our weekly email reminder please contact Gwen Gilles.

Handicrafts
Beading

For all those who bead, want to learn a new skill or meet new friends with a common interest, join this new group. It meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 10:30 am in a member's home. Contact Carmen Boscio for more information.

Sew 'n Tell

This group is designed for those who like to do handiwork. We meet in a member's home on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. Bring your knitting, cross stitch, mending or other handiwork, or join us to learn a new skill and meet friends with a common interest. For more information please contact Cathy Chin.

Scrapbooking

Where are all your priceless photos? If you want to get them organized and looking pretty this is the activity for you. The Scrapbooking crew meets during the 1st and 3rd weeks of the month. Bring your photos, albums and supplies and spend some time getting it together as well as some new ideas. Newcomers and old-hands welcome. Contact Susan Studebaker-Rutledge.

Quilting

Beginner and experienced quilters are welcome. Quilters meet every Monday afternoon from 1-4pm. Bring a project to work on and spend a pleasant afternoon with fellow sewers. For more information, contact Diane McLennan.

Literary
Book Group

The AWA Book Group meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 1:00 pm. All members decide on the books to read in advance so that everyone has ample time to obtain and read each book. The meetings last about 1½ hours and include a light snack. New members are welcome and you are free to attend on an occasional basis if you just want to discuss a specific book or to see what the group is about. Check out Book Lists for reading lists, resources and contact details.

Book Swap

Come by the AWA and check out the book swap area. Stop by any time to the office and swap books that have been given by other AWA members. Fiction, non-fiction, murder mysteries, best sellers, award winners -- there is something for everyone! Due to limited space please take some books away if you bring some in! Books that have not circulated in a few months will be given to charity. Please bring books in good condition. For the time being, no Harlequin romance novels will be accepted. Happy swapping!

We are also starting a DVD swap and are soliciting donations. Any non-pirated DVDs will be gratefully received!
