Join the Arts & Culture Committee on a private tour, led by fellow AWA member Darlene Kasten, of the Asian Civilizations Museum's exhibit: Guo Pei: Chinese Art and Couture. This exhibit presents a dialogue between historical and contemporary Chinese design, juxtaposing 29 embroidered masterworks by China’s foremost couturière with 20 Chinese artworks in the collection of the Asian Civilizations Museum.

Guo Pei’s dramatic, sculptural gowns reflect influences from growing up in Beijing surrounded by Chinese imperial art and mythology. Known perhaps most famously for the now-iconic yellow cape American celebrity Rihanna wore to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala in 2015, Guo Pei recognized for the depth of craftsmanship, Chinese historical references, and beauty in her fantastical works. Her creations also express her personal take on contemporary fashion and aesthetics.

Exploring her impact on everyday lives beyond the runway, the exhibition will present several of Guo Pei’s intricate Chinese bridal gowns – including two directly inspired by artworks in the ACM collection. Serving as points of encounter and departure, the ACM objects invite contemplation on how Guo Pei references and reimagines Chinese aesthetics and tradition for China and the world today.

Darlene has been living in Singapore for almost four years. A volunteer docent with the Friends of the Museums Singapore, she guides at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) and the Malay Heritage Centre, and is currently training with STPI. Darlene has recently been part of the research team for ACM’s blockbuster special exhibition, Guo Pei: Chinese Art & Couture. Born and raised in and around one of the world’s premier fashion centers, New York City, Darlene is delighted to share ACM’s first collaboration between ancient artifacts and contemporary couture with members of AWA.
