Volunteering: Willing Hearts Food Prep

Join AWA to volunteer to prepare food for those less fortunate.  Tasks that volunteers can expect to do include preparing daily meals, cleaning dishes, unpacking grocery trucks and repacking donated items.  Volunteering with Willing Hearts is a chance for you assist with the assembly of a massive volume of food that will directly impact someone immediately.

Please note that this is a full commercial kitchen preparing meat, seafood  and poultry products.   Kitchen also handles nut products.  If you have dietary allergies or restrictions, please carefully consider participating in this volunteer activity.

Children older than 10 are allowed but must be supervised 1:1 by an adult volunteer at all times.

Dress Code

For your own personal safety and general hygiene purposes:

  • Please wear closed-toe shoes (i.e. sneakers, tennis shoes, etc.). No slippers, flip flops and sandals, please
  • T-shirts must have sleeves and one that you would not mind getting stains on it. No tank tops, please
  • Bermudas, culottes, tights, etc, allowed as long as they are at or below the knee. No short shorts please.

Just as you would not like to see any stain of hair or any inedible in your food, our beneficiaries do not appreciate them too! These * items will be provided for you in the kitchen.

  • You MUST put on a *disposable hair net while in the kitchen. Please ensure that hair is tucked neatly into the net like this, otherwise, there is little point in putting on a hair net.
  • The use of *gloves IS required when handling food, except at the vegetable
  • To prevent stains  on on your clothes, *aprons is highly recommended – you may choose to bring your own.
  • NO jewelry, please! Not even earrings, bracelets and rings as these could fall off into food products
Health and Safety

  1. Do not work when feeling unwell. Seek medical attention immediately.
  2. Avoid coughing and sneezing near food.
  3. Avoid touching the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hair or skin when handling food.
  4. Wash your hands with soap before handling food, after using the toilet, and after coughing and sneezing. Work up a good lather , paying attention to fingers, nails, and back of the hand. Dry hands using paper towels or hand dryers. Please view NEA’s Importance of Proper Hand Washing Video
  5. DO NOT handle food with  bear hands. Use gloves or utensils.
  6. Keep fingernails short and clean and not put on nail polish or fake fingernails. Bacteria  harboured under fingernails can get into food when fingernails come into contact with food. Bacteria will multiply and contaminate food. Do not wear rings and other accessories that might trap dirt.
  7. Cover all wounds and cuts on your hands with waterproof plasters.
  8. Wear clean attire.
  9. Keep hair and beard neat and tidy. Long hair should be tied up using hair restraints such as caps.
  10. Keep food preparation surfaces and equipment clean.
  11. Practice good refuse management.

(registration closes at midnight the day before this date)

EVENT PAYMENT (for online registration events): 
You can pay using a PayPal account, or a debit/credit card. To pay with a debit/credit card, when you get to the PayPal screen, please click 'check out as guest'.

• Bookings open on the first working day of the month.
• You must register in advance to attend an event.
• If an event is full, please join the waitlist, if one has been created.
• The event ends at approximately the listed time.
• Only adults over 18 years may attend AWA tours unless otherwise designated.
• Family members and out of town guests pay AWA member price, other Singapore residents pay the guest price.

• If the event is marked non-refundable, then no refund can be given. You can offer your space to other members via the AWA Facebook Member Community and notify the office of any change.
• All other AWA event fees include a $5 non-refundable cancellation fee. This cannot be returned under any circumstances.
• If an event is not marked as non-refundable, you may cancel your attendance by emailing the event coordinator AND office@awasingapore.org up to 4 working days prior to the event.
• If you paid online, we will refund you via Paypal within 30 days. If you paid by any other method you will be asked for your preferred refund method, cash or check.
• You may transfer your attendance to another AWA member or to another identical event (e.g. Mahjong game to Mahjong game) no less than 4 working days prior to the event, by emailing office@awasingapore.org with the new attendee’s name.
• Cancellations received within 4 working days of the event will not be refunded.
