What is “Gamelan”?
Gamelan comes from the Indonesian word gamel, meaning "to strike", and refers to the traditional ensemble of percussion instruments made of bronze and wood, such as bronze bars, gongs, cymbals, bells and two-sided drums.
A gamelan ensemble can consist of a small group of 4-5 people to an orchestra of over 30 musicians. Commonly seen across Bail and Java, gamelan music is performed at a wide range of venues, from formal events in the royal palaces to serving as an accompaniment to shadow puppet theatres.

Our instructors will teach basic gamelan music theory and the basic techniques of playing. Together we will explore through this fun, hands-on experience. Much more than a music lesson, this workshop is also an introduction to Indonesian heritage and culture.
