Tennis Assessment

AWA Tennis uses the AWA Court Assessment System, which is administered by the American Club PBI coaches. All new AWA members participating in any daytime AWA tennis activity must have an AWA Court Assessment so that players are grouped by ability in our different programs to ensure fun and competitive games. It is also recommended for all AWA members be re-assessed approximately every 2 years. This assessment process does not affect any current NTRP, ITN, or USTA rating you may have and will only be used for AWA events.

Register for your assessment on the main tennis page here. Each assessment costs $12 and can be paid for online or by going into the AWA office, 15 Scotts Road, Thong Teck Building, #03-01. Registration can be made up until midnight the day before the assessment day. You will receive a reminder 24 hours before the assessment.

What to expect from the assessment
The assessments will be held at the American Club courts, which are turf courts. Please assemble on the bleachers in the tennis gallery area overlooking the courts prior to your assessment.

We suggest you turn up 15-20 minutes prior to the start time to register and warm up.

Just before the allotted start time, we will assign you a number which will be pinned to your back so that the assessor can identify you. The assessor will then assign you a partner, and you will be asked to play some rallies and then play some games.

It is a relaxed process and nothing to be overly concerned or anxious about.  AWA tennis is about having fun and socializing.

The assessment will be looking at the following:
  • Stroke Technique & Serving
  • Depth of shots and consistency
  • Movement on Court and Ball Anticipation
  • Court Positioning and Doubles Strategy
  • Scoring

What are the ratings?
We use the USTA rating system but have added in the - and + to give some flexibility to the rating. For example: -3.0 would indicate you are a weaker 3.0 and a +3.0 would indicate you are a stronger 3.0.

2.0 -2.5 2.5 +2.5 -3.0 3.0 +3.0 -3.5 3.5 +3.5 -4.0 4.0 +4.0 -4.5 4.5 +4.5

For a full description of the ratings, please click here.

How long will the assessment last and why?
The assessment will last between 30 - 45 minutes depending on the number of players that have to be assessed. However, please allow 1 - 1 ½ hrs as the assessment may run over. We will split the group into two groups of 8 with a maximum of 16 players in any one session. When possible, we will match players with the same ability and will provide a break during the assessment.

We understand that our assessors can only assess “what they see” in the short time available. If you are unhappy with your final assessment, please feel free to register for another assessment to be reassessed. If you wish to discuss your comments or have any feedback, please contact the coordinators or assessors.

Please understand that this is an informal assessment based on the time available, and the rating is to be used for tennis events with the AWA. If you receive a rating below what you were expecting and you are unable to play an event, please feel free to contact the assessment coordinators to discuss.

The weather can be unpredictable in Singapore. If it is raining or hazey, we will make a call and contact you via email at least 45 mins before the start of the planned assessment. The rescheduled assessment will be communicated to you within 24 hours.
